The Northern Ireland chair of the Social Development Committee, Alex
Maskey, was quoted by the press calling for tougher laws that regulated online
gambling and casinos in the UK. According to Mr. Maskey, the increasing
popularity of online gambling is taking its tall on the citizens by increasing
gambling addiction. No studies or any solid numbers were quoted to support his
acquisitions, however. These statements come in the heels of the
announcement that some of the Northern Ireland's bookmakers are petitioning the
government to allow them to remain open on Sunday in order to better compete
with the online bookmakers and the missed bets on Sunday the land-based
bookmakers could be taking advantage of. Mr. Maskey was also quoted urging the
SDC to start lobbying whoever necessary in order to limit the online gambling
impact. |
